SIXTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

HELIKE VI

HELIKE AFTER 373 BC

AN INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACH

September 4-6, 2021

The Sixth International Conference on Ancient Helike and Aigialeia (HELIKE VI) took place in Aigion, Achaea, from 4-6 September 2021. The main theme of the Conference is the history, archaeology and geology of Helike and its area after the 373 BC catastrophic earthquake, and the new settlement developed in late Classical-Hellenistic times including a building complex of excellently preserved workshops associated with textile activities.

The Conference follows up in a series of International Conferences organised by the Helike Society and held at certain intervals in the region of Aigialeia, Achaea. The previous Fifth International Conference dedicated to Helike’s patron god Poseidon and his cult in Helike and the Peloponnese, with an emphasis to the god’s capacity as god of earthquakes and natural catastrophes was held in 2013. The Conference Proceedings volume entitled POSEIDON God of earthquakes and Waters, Cult and Sanctuaries, Helike V, edited by Dora Katsonopoulou, was published by the Helike Society in 2017.

The Helike VI Conference included scientific announcements, experimental archaeology exhibitions related to ancient spinning/dyeing/weaving and fulling techniques in collaboration with SEN Heritage Looms of Athens, exhibition of paintings on textiles by a local painter, cultural events and a guided tour to the Helike area and the archaeological site.
