FULLING, DYEING AND WEAVING ACTIVITIES IN THE CORINTHIAN GULF
September 26-28, 2020
The Sixth International Conference on Ancient Helike and Aigialeia (HELIKE VI) will take place in the city of Aigion, Aigialeia Municipality, Achaea, from 26-28 September 2020. The main theme of the Conference is Helikeís geology, history and archaeology following the 373 BC catastrophic earthquake and the new settlement of the late Classical-Hellenistic period developed a few decades after 373 in the area including an excellently preserved complex building of fulling, dyeing and weaving activities.
The Conference follows up in a series of International Conferences organized by our Society and held at certain intervals in the region of Aigialeia, Achaea. The previous Fifth International Conference dedicated to Helikeís patron god Poseidon and his cult in Helike and the Peloponnese, with an emphasis to the godís capacity as god of earthquakes and natural catastrophes was held in 2013. The Conference Proceedings entitled POSEIDON God of earthquakes and Waters, Cult and Sanctuaries, Helike V, edited by Dora Katsonopoulou, was published by the Helike Society in 2017.
The Helike VI Conference, including scientific announcements, experimental archaeology activities and exhibitions related to ancient spinning, dyeing, weaving and fulling techniques in collaboration with SEN Heritage Looms, as well as cultural events and a guided tour to the archaeological site of Helike, is organized in collaboration with the Department of Geology, University of Patras, and will be held in Aigion of the Aigialeia Municipality.Conference languages are Greek and English. Talks should not exceed the 20 minutes. All Conference participants (speakers and session Presidents) will stay in Aigion and their hotel accommodations will be covered by the organizers.
